Joan Massagué received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Barcelona in 1978. Since 1989 he has held the Alfred P. Sloan Chair in Cancer Biology at MSKCC in New York, and is a HHMI. He identified the TGF receptors, their mechanism of signal transduction, and the central concept of how this pathway controls the cell cycle through CDK inhibitors and cell fate through master differentiation genes. More recently Dr. Massagué identified genes and mechanisms mediating various stages of metastasis in different organs. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, the Institute of Medicine, and EMBO.
