Dr John Hooper’s Cancer Cell Biology laboratory is focussed on understanding molecular mechanisms underlying cancer with particular interests in malignancies of the prostate, colon/rectum and ovary. An ongoing emphasis is on the role in cancer of cell surface receptor systems that are activated by proteases. This work is underpinned by molecular, enzymology and cell biology approaches and animal models of cancer. The Hooper laboratory is also developing research strengths in isolating and characterising cell populations from human tumours. This involves approaches to enrich for rare cells, genomic analysis and mouse xenograft and orthotopic tumour models.
